The Selection by Kiera Cass

In the case of The Selection, the saying "don't judge a book by its cover" is false. This series is about a girl, 300 years later, living in a society with castes determining everything. When America Singer is entered by her mother to a completion called the selection, she is dismayed for a few reasons. The competition is a once in a lifetime opportunity when the prince of Ilia becomes of age and is seeking a bride. It is thrilling for all 35 teenage girls chosen to let themselves be sought after by the kind and charming Prince Maxon. But for America, a royal life as a One is unattainable with her personality of a Five. Her sentiments are also confirmed with her feelings for a Six named Aspen, with whom she carries out a very secretive relationship.

Immediately captivated by the blue dress and redheaded princess, I knew I was going to love The Selection by Kiera Cass. The first in its series, Kiera Cass does a superb job for setting the stage to a completion filled with feisty girls, a handsome prince, and a particular rebel that stands out to him above all. As I truly like books that take place in royal settings, this specific one with a hint of the futuristic genre and rebellion in the midst of the society really pleased me. I think any teen girl audience would find this story very exciting and interesting as they witness the ups and downs of feeling between two very unlike people.

The selection is a captivating novel about a young woman named America participating in a competition for the throne. The concept of the event, is for several young women to win over the prince’s heart. America goes into this forced by her mother, and to her surprise she gets chosen to attend the palace to, as well as other girls. Since this book takes place in the future, there is a caste system. Ones being royal and eights being the poorest; there are people between as well. America was only one of the few fives to be a part of the Selection for diversity reasons. This is a romance based novel.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. I have read this book many times and it doesn’t get boring. I would definitely recommend this book to people who prefer romantic and chill books. There is no action it’s mainly about a girl experiencing something new. Overall, a wonderful book that didn’t disappoint. If you prefer action packed science fiction, this book isn’t for you. This is all romance and no violence. I also hear there is a movie based on this book coming soon.

This story circulates around a dystopian government filled with social class problems. Each person in the country of Illea, present day North America. Each person has a number from one-eight one being royalty and eight being homeless. America is red head born to a family of five who are performers and artists. When she gets picked for The Selection, a process where the Prince picks his future queen, se is not sure whether or not she will be picked.

I felt this book was not very dystopian but more like a bachelor themed book. Sure there were the occasional attacks and unfair treatment of the lower caste but the book did not focus on those problems. I would recommend this to people who like watching shows like The Bachelor/Bachelorette. I, of course, like to read a bit more darker topics and this book did not reach my expectations. The plot was average because it was very predictable. We all know America will be selected right when she get through the first round. It is just a different kind of Dystopian novel.

This book follows the story of a young girl named America Singer. She is a lower-class girl ranking fifth in a social hierarchy of 8. She is in love with a boy who is in the sixth class. However, she is expected to marry above her rank in order to be able to help her large family. When the letter arrives in the mail about The Selection, a competition where girls from the country are chosen to compete for the prince's heart, her mother forces her to sign up. When her name gets drawn, she is forced to go to the castle. Will she fall in love with the prince, or stay loyal to her first love Aspen?

I read this book a few years back and have reread it since. I think that it's a nice, simple read and is a great first book in a wonderful series. There isn't excessive world-building, which I enjoy. You find out about the social order, the palace, and the royal family as the story goes on. The information isn't dumped on the reader in one big piece. Although, I have grown in my tastes as a reader since. The story is simple and easy to follow which may be good for some. However, I prefer complex worlds with many characters which this book does not have. However, I overall enjoyed the read and go back to it when I need a break in between the more complex series I read. I definitely recommend this read to anyone who is interested in romance or royal stories. I give this book a 4/5 because I liked the story, but don't necessarily care for the simple writing style.
